Welcome to the website of the Northumbria Group of the LDWA
Do you wish to remain or get fit?
Do you need an antidote to a stressful lifestyle?
Would you like to see more of the magnificent and varied countryside of Northumbria?

Then we can help you
Whether you call it walking, rambling or hiking, that is what we enjoy and what we do.

The Northumbria Group of the Long Distance Walkers Association caters for many kinds of walking, from organised challenge events to informal strolls. The only criterion is that all walks should be enjoyable as well as providing exercise and stimulation for the mind and body. We organise about two walks a month of 15 to 25 miles in length, over the moorland, rural or coastal areas between the Scottish Borders, North Pennines, Cleveland Hills and the Yorkshire Dales.

To newcomers, this length may appear daunting, but it is well within the capabilities of most walkers, especially with good company and the encouragement of our experienced walk leaders.

Each walk in our programme has a leader who selects and plans the route, and the walks are undertaken at a reasonable and sociable pace to accommodate people of varying abilities. Nobody is ever left behind.

Even if you are not a member of the LDWA, you may like to try a couple of walks with us. Check out our walks programme to see if there is one to suit you.

Like many of the 43 local groups within the LDWA, we organise an annual event, the Durham Dales Challenge, which offers three routes of 16, 28 and 52 miles, to be completed in a specified time. There are no prizes or trophies, it is purely a personal challenge with a badge and certificate to prove that you are someone special, a bit more determined than others.

In addition to walks, we meet every third Tuesday of the month at the Bridge Hotel in Newcastle.
